AI Trading Tools Built for Futures Traders

By NinjaTrader Team

NinjaTrader offers three artificial intelligence (AI) trading tools built specifically for futures traders: Nina, an AI trading companion inside the platform; a Model Context Protocol (MCP) connection that links the AI app you already use to your NinjaTrader account; and AI Strategy Builder, which turns a strategy you describe in your own words into compiled, testable NinjaScript.

Most AI trading tools weren't built with futures in mind. They're multi-asset generalists covering stocks, options, and crypto, with futures added later, if at all. That gap shows up in exactly the details a futures trader cares about: which contract is the front month, what a rollover does to an open position, and how margin and session boundaries change the math on a trade. Here's what each NinjaTrader tool does, where it works, and how you stay in charge.

What AI Trading Tools Does NinjaTrader Offer?

NinjaTrader offers three AI trading tools, each doing a different job at a different point in your trading. None of them replaces your judgment.

Three Tools, Three Different Jobs

Nina is the one that already knows you. It works from your NinjaTrader account and your trade history, so its answers are about your trading rather than the market in general. The MCP connection points outward instead, bringing the AI app you use every day into contact with real account data. AI Strategy Builder is for the moment when you've got an idea and need something you can actually test.

What They Have in Common

  • Your data, not generic advice. Each tool works from your account, your orders, or your own description of a strategy.
  • Built for futures. Contract months, rollovers, margin, and session structure are treated as first-class problems, not edge cases.
  • You approve what happens. These tools read, explain, calculate, and draft. Acting is your call.
What it means

The AI does the reading and the arithmetic. You still decide what to do with it, and all three tools are built that way on purpose.

Why Most AI Trading Tools Weren't Built for Futures

There's a difference between a tool designed for futures and one adapted to them.

An equities-first design misses things specific to futures, while a futures-native one is built around them.

The Multi-Asset Generalist Problem

Walk through the AI features at most brokerages and you'll find tools designed for equities first. That's a reasonable business decision but a poor fit for futures. An AI app that doesn't know a contract expires will treat a position that's about to roll like any other. One that treats margin as a static number will size a trade your account can't actually carry into the next session. The answers look confident either way, which is the problem. Want the wider view? We cover how AI futures trading is developing as a category.

What Futures-Native Design Actually Changes

  • Contracts, not tickers. The tradable instrument changes on a schedule, and knowing which one is current is table stakes.
  • Margin that moves. Requirements change, and a position sized without them is sized wrong.
  • Sessions that matter. Futures trade nearly around the clock, so where a session begins and ends shapes both risk and results.
Key takeaway

An AI tool that doesn't model contract expiration, margin, or session structure isn't wrong about futures occasionally. It's wrong about them structurally.

With that context, here's what each of the three tools actually does, starting with the one built into the platform.

Nina: Ask Your AI Trading Companion About Your Account and Your Trading

NinjaTrader's Nina is an AI trading companion built into the platform that works from your own account data, not the market at large.

It does two jobs: answering questions about what's happening in your account right now, and surfacing patterns across your trading history.

Answers About Your Account, When You Need Them

Something happens in your account that you don't immediately understand. Your margin requirement changes. An order gets rejected. A position is liquidated. Nina explains it, in plain language, from your own account data, without a support ticket or a wait.

Patterns in Your Own Trading

The second thing Nina does is harder to get anywhere else. Most tools describe the market. Nina describes your trading: how long you hold losers compared with winners, whether you re-enter immediately after a loss, how often you reverse direction in a session, etc. It shows you the pattern and points you toward your own risk management settings. It doesn't tell you what to trade. If you want the research behind those specific patterns, our AI trading companion deep dive walks through the behavioral finance each one draws on.

Nina is NinjaTrader's AI-powered trading companion designed to provide users with insights, summaries, and information related to markets, trading activity, and platform usage. Nina is a tool for informational and educational purposes only and does not provide investment advice, recommendations, or performance predictions. Any outputs, responses, or insights generated by Nina reflect system-generated interpretations and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated. Such information should not be relied upon as the sole basis for trading decisions, and users are responsible for independently verifying all information and conducting their own analysis.

Nina is provided by NinjaTrader, LLC, a software development company that owns and supports the NinjaTrader trading platform. Brokerage services are provided by NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a NinjaTrader, Kraken Derivatives US, and Tradovate, a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA Member (NFA ID: 0309379). What it means

Nina explains and reflects. It never recommends a trade, and it never forecasts an outcome.

MCP Connection: Link the AI You Already Use to Your NinjaTrader Account

NinjaTrader's MCP connection gives the AI app you already use direct access to your account: positions, orders, and live market data. It comes in two pieces—the connection that provides that access, and NinjaTrader-authored skills that decide what your AI does with it.

Your AI, Working From Real Account Data

Plenty of traders already ask an AI app about their trading. The catch is that it can't see anything. You paste in a few numbers, it reasons about those numbers, and whatever it misses stays missed.

The MCP connection closes that gap. Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems, and NinjaTrader supports it—so the AI app you already use can work from your real positions, orders, and market data instead of numbers you typed in by hand. There's nothing new to learn and no separate app to open.

NinjaTrader-Authored Skills, Not Improvisation

Raw account access on its own would just let a general-purpose model improvise against your account. On top of the connection sit 13 trading skills authored by NinjaTrader: defined workflows that sequence the right steps, do the math, and show you a plan. You say what you want, and the relevant skill handles it. Here are four of them:

  • Market context. Session structure, value area, volatility, and order flow, summarized as a read on whether a market is trending, balanced, or volatile.
  • Risk sizing before you act. Position size from your risk percentage and stop distance, with a full bracket drafted and your account limits checked.
  • Session review. Hold times, streaks, and results by market and by hour, without keeping the journal by hand.
  • Trade replay. One closed trade reconstructed to show how far it actually ran, and what a different exit would have done.

The skills themselves run in AI clients that support agent skills, which today means Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor. Other clients can connect to the same MCP server and work with the underlying tools directly.

Agentic trading involves substantial risk and is not suitable for everyone. NinjaTrader does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of any data or information provided through the AI service you independently choose to use. Information provided using MCP is not investment advice or a recommendation from NinjaTrader. NinjaTrader is not responsible for any investment decision you make in reliance on information generated by AI. You should independently verify information before making any trading or investment decisions. Instructions are generated from your AI service's output and may be inaccurate or not reflect your intent. You are responsible for reviewing, editing, and deciding whether to convert each AI-generated instruction into an order on the NinjaTrader platform.

What it means

Where the skills are available, your AI app follows NinjaTrader-built logic instead of inventing its own approach to your account.

AI Strategy Builder: Turn a Plain-Language Idea Into a Testable Strategy

NinjaTrader's AI Strategy Builder turns a plain-language description of your entries, exits, and risk rules into compiled, testable NinjaScript.

It works in two steps: getting to code that runs, then refining that code by conversation instead of editing it.

From Description to Compiled NinjaScript

The distance between having an idea and having a strategy you can test has usually been NinjaScript, the C#-based language behind custom NinjaTrader tools. AI Strategy Builder shortens that distance. Describe your entries, your exits, and your risk rules the way you would explain them out loud, and it writes the code, compiles it, and prepares it for backtesting in Strategy Analyzer.

It's trained on NinjaScript documentation rather than being a general-purpose coding assistant pointed at a trading problem. That's the difference between code that compiles inside the platform and code that just looks plausible.

Refine by Conversation

First versions are rarely right. Change a rule, add a filter, adjust your risk, and it rebuilds and recompiles rather than starting over. If you've used the no-code NinjaTrader Strategy Builder, this is the same idea, reached by describing what you want instead of clicking through drop-down menus.

Simulated trading does not represent actual trading and is based on hypothetical conditions. Actual trading results may differ significantly due to factors such as market conditions, liquidity, execution, and the emotional and psychological impact of risking real money. Simulated trading is provided for educational and platform-familiarization purposes only and should not be relied upon as an indication or expectation of results in a live trading environment.

What it means

AI Strategy Builder writes and compiles the code. Judging the strategy is a separate job, and it's yours.

Where You Stay in Control

NinjaTrader checks every order against your margin, position size, and loss limits before it can fill, whether you placed it or AI proposed it.

Approving what AI proposes is the second layer, and that's on you.

Your Controls, Enforced by NinjaTrader

The limits on your account are enforced by NinjaTrader, not by the AI. Margin, fee, and permission checks run before an order can go through. Your max position size, daily loss limit, and trade-volume caps live in your account settings, on NinjaTrader's side, and can stop an order before it fills. An AI app can't talk its way past any of it, because it isn't the thing doing the checking.

Nothing Placed Without Your Approval

The trading skills work the same way by design. They propose an order and wait. You see the sizing, the bracket, and what it would cost against your limits, and then you decide. NinjaTrader's own pre-trade risk check has the final say: if it rejects a proposal, the workflow stops there.

That's also the honest test for any AI trading product, including ones that aren't ours. Tools that promise returns or ask you to hand over the decision are making a different offer, and our guide to AI trading scams covers what that usually looks like.

Key takeaway

AI can read the market, size the risk, and draft the order. Approving it stays with you, and your risk settings are enforced by NinjaTrader regardless of what any AI suggests.
