If I have a chart with 30 minute intervals, if I call CrossAbove(...) at close of a bar and compare two data series, will it be testing whether they crossed each other at any time in the past n bars, or if their closing values crossed each other at any time in the past n bars?

It will look at closing values. You will need to use CalculateOnBarClose = false if you want to see if they crossed ever.
