Default 32 vs 64? XP vs. 7?

In the next few days, I'm going to get a new, screaming fast computer, and the manufacturer of the computer is suggesting that I upgrade from my familiar Windows XP Pro with 32 bit processing to Windows 7 with 64 bit processing or at least XP Pro with 64 bit processing.

However, I've been told that Ninjatrader has experienced some problems either with Windows 7 or with 64 bit processing. Is there any truth to this rumor? If so, could someone please fill me in on the details?

Many thanks,
Tasuki

Tasuki, all mentioned operating systems would be supported by us, our currently 'in public beta' NT7 release will offer native 64 bit support as well.

Bertrand,
Thanks for the info. It is perhaps worthy of note that "native" 64 bit processing is different from "emulated", which is slower. Some other charting packages like Tradestation only do the latter presently, making NT a good choice. I'm really looking forward to version 7.

Although there is support in NT7 for both Windows 7 and 64 bit processing, better check your data feed. Here's one example: The API for Zenfire doesn't have any 64bit support, if you plan on using NT7 with ZenFire data feed you're locked in 32 bit processing for the time being.

I personally don't think there is much difference between 32bit and 64bit for charting and executions which is my primary use, but i am sure that for backtesting and other CPU intensive tasks there is a difference.

With that said, if i were looking for a brand new trading machine right now, i'd go for 64bit OS and get a little future proofing. I'd imagine that at some point most applications will offer 64bit support.

Good luck

AQ

Default Windows 7 64 Bit and Running 32 Bit NT?

If I install Windows 7 64-bit OS and then install NT's 32 Bit version-will I avoid any issues that people are having with NT in 64-bit mode?

Asked another way-are any issues people are having with the 64-bit NT version or the 64-BIT OS (Windows 7) version?

Jim, I'm not aware of a general issue either way - which dataprovider / broker are you using?

Zen-fire---

I really didn't ask my question very clearly--what I should have asked is if I am running under the 64-bit version of Windows 7--can I still successfully run the 32-bit version of NT or do/should I use the 64-bit version?

Jim, on a 64 bit OS both the 32 bit and 64 bit native versions of NT7 are installed per default - you can run both then as needed - for ZenFire 64 bit and non US users please be aware of this 'sticky' - http://www.ninjatrader.com/support/f...ad.php?t=35278
