When I hit ctrl-f to change the chart instrument, the selection is only on the first two characters of the symbol name. So if the symbol is TROW, only the TR is selected, and I still have to manually delete the OW.

You can try just directly typing the instrument name into the chart window itself. You don't need to bring up the Ctrl + F window.
