A calendar/alarm would be helpful

I forgot that today is the FOMC announcement. I had decided to not trade on these days until after 2pm because the whole market usually goes sideways until then. But I forgot and traded at the market open today.

What would be nice in Ninja Trader is some kind of simple calendar with alarms or reminders that would pop up if you start up the program on a day that has any reminders to display. This should not be too hard to program -- I'm sure there are controls out there to just plug in to do it.

If you go to File--> New--> News you can setup alerts based off your datafeed's News feed.

I guess Zen-Fire doesn't have a news feed, because the window is blank when I open it.

Something like this is ESSENTIAL. The alarm from news feature is great for the small number of users with a news feed. GAIN Capital has 2 news feeds, Forex Insider and Market News (RTT News) and neither seem to work in NinjaTrader.

If the News reader supported .RSS (the same simple .XML structure already found throughout NinjaTrader) than EVERY user would have access to an almost unlimited variety of market news...

In the meantime I think some type of indicator could be created to help serve this purpose. Today I manually marked my charts ahead of time so I would be prepared for the news, but a way to automate this process would be very helpful. Having an indicator that's aware of upcoming major news would also allow 'news aware' strategies that could either enter or exit the market in preparation. Likely one of the biggest reasons automated strategies fall apart is because they can't react quick enough. Watching the EURUSD during the FOMC meeting was wild. I couldn't keep up so I certainly don't expect a lagging indicator to!

Anyway, this is just a thought, but colored rectangles (with different colors depending on the importance of the news) could be an easy and helpful way to be prepared for news, and also more easily gauge its impact in hindsight.

I'd be happy with just a simple calendar control where I can put reminders that pop up in a message window when the reminder is due.
