    64-bit OS

I know that NT does not officially support 64 bit OS as yet. But I understand some people are using either XP 64-bit or Vista 64-bit. So, for people who are doing that, how's it work? Does NT get to use more memory? I know it is a 32-bit process, so, it won't be able to get a lot more memory, but, maybe a little more?

Yeah, I saw that thread. A couple of people said they have got it to work, but not any discussion as to if there are any advantages or not.

I have 3 superDoms open currently and it's using 108 megs of ram. Running XP 64 bit. no problems at all so far.

Thanks for the report. Do you see any advantages of using 64-bit?

The main reason I went with a 64bit OS was to take advantage of 4gb of ram (with the possibility to upgrade to 8gb for whatever reason in the future).

Windows 32bit can't use more than 3.5gb of ram (or somewhere around that number).

It's even worse than than. I read somewhere that a win32 process can't take more than ~1.5 GB RAM (don't have a link at hand right now though).

Yes, but with the per process limit for 32-bit processes, per Dierk, I wasn't so sure it would be any real help if you are mainly running NT.

The amount of memory you can get with 32 bit Windows depends on how much video RAM and BIOS you have. I have a machine with 1 gig of video RAM and Windows only sees a max of 2.5 g RAM.

Now, a little known fact is, Intel & AMD processors have supported more than 4 gigs in 32 bit for years. Its called PAE mode. Microsoft supports PAE on their Enterprise and Datacenter versions of their 32-bit server OSes. I believe (though could be wrong) but I think early betas of Vista 32-bit also supported PAE, but MS pulled it. Among the reasons is, not all 32-bit hardware drivers are PAE compliant and MS decided not to introduce more driver problems.

Still, I've kinda toyed with the idea of running MS Sever 2003 or 2008 Enterprise in 32-bit PAE. Though, its an expensive OS to run as a workstation OS.

If I recall correctly, Windows default allows 2 gigs max for 32 bit processes, but there is an option to turn on a 3 gigs mode.

yeah i think your right about that, allows 2 gigs as default, coz im using 2 gigs ddr2 in winxp 32-bit, i usually run 2 metatraders, ninja trader with 3 or 5 charts, Microsoft outlook, firefox 3.0, several other softwares to keep track of pc performance, skype, and few others and with all these stuffs im running at the same time, max ram usages its only 900mbs not even 1 gigs.

if im watching flash videos or live webinar together with my other regular stuffs, then it will take upto 1.5gigs of ram.

I recently upgraded to Vista x64 on a Q6600 with 4MB DDR2. NT seems to be running very well. I have 4 DOMs and 4 Charts open. That is using 425MB according to task manager.

I am also running Tradestation at the same time. Total memory usage again according to task manager is 2.6 GB.

I think that it is running better than the same config was running with XP Pro and 4 GB memory.
