View Full Version : Password protection

This item is simple but possibly a big issue for some people. I would like to suggest an optional simple log on password when Ninja is started.

Possibly by accident or intentionally you could lose thousands of dollars in an instant if someone cranked up Ninja and started placing orders. A few orders below market and then "close" is all it would take.

My pc is secure but occasionally I will work with a friend on my pc and if I step away I don't want them to have a look at my trades or profit. Also I am sure there are people with children who could accidentally cause some real damage in a short time.

I appreciate having a pc logon password and physical restriction to a pc but it would be nice if I had an optional second level of defense considering the financial damage that can be done so quickly and easily. The same logic could be used to "lock" or time out the program instead of logging off or locking the pc when stepping away.

I have online banking but it requires a password. Ninja doesn't and can do a lot more damage.

How about simply turning on a screensaver which is password protected when you leave the PC?

I can do that and it is easy. But I still think it would be a good thing because there is a lot of money at stake. We will see if anyones adds to this thread.

Thanks.

Well, whatever password protection we could implement it would not be any safer than the one you already have with Windows.

HI
I agree with CT it would be very useful if in a new version of Ninjatrader that a password for ninja was required to be input before program was allowed to start. Most other programs have this feature

Thanks for your suggestion. We'll add it to the list of future considerations.

Hi,

my concern is more about accidentally doing something in the dom or whatnot while I'm at the computer but not actually trading. I mean sometimes you want to be ready to trade, but taking a break or whatever.

I would like to see a Lock button, so that Ninja becomes untradeable until the lock button is pressed again to unlock it.

I am not talking about having a password with it, just a lock button. If a password was attached to it then it would become cumbersome.

Please consider this, thanks!

Simply put your dom in sim mode. It is what we do to put the "safety" on.

Hi All
CT I am in total agreement with you. I know of no other financial software that does not have a password. Image online banking saying to you to use a screen saver password as protection. I do always have ninja start in sim mode. I would not think it would be to difficult for ninja to incorporate password protection

I only know of 2 ways of doing this... both of which are too slow...

1) is to use global simulation mode... after unchecking global sim mode from the menu, then you must find your account again in the drop down account box of the DOM... sometimes when the market moves, it moves quickly... so this is too slow to be useful in that scenario.

2) switch to a sim account... this is much faster, but still when there are a lot of accounts listed it takes time (and mouse accuracy) to select the correct one.

If there was a little lock icon.. it would be as simple as one click to unlock. So it would be then possible to jump into the market as quickly as possible. Of course for now, I'll just leave it in trading mode when I'm around...

because the other problem too with sim mode and trading mode is that sometimes I am paying more attention to the charts than the color of the DOM... and after sitting down at the computer I enter a trade, it starts going into serious profit... and then I realize I had it in SIM mode for safety... :(

it could be just me, but I imagine there may be other people that may have done this before also.

I would certainly like to see a 'lock' facility. This would allow my charts to be active, fast to 'unlock' when wanting to trade - but more importantly allow me to walk away from PC without too much fear (I have a 2 year old son that likes to play trader)

Not sure I agree about password requirement, I do not load NT on an open PC and only on my windows account.

Perhaps NT could provide check box to 'save' datafeed/broker password, that way those who don't could be promted for their datafeed/broker password. At the moment NT assumes password wants to be saved (I have to confess that is the way I like it)

Fast logout of windows is WindowsKey + L

This leaves ALL your programs running without a full user logout, but essentially locks your account. Short of someone having your windows password, there is no way they can trade your account.

Login is very quick as well.

Agree that would resolve the original posters question. But the 'Lock' facility would still allow me to see the charts - which cannot be done under the windows lock as it takes you to a login screen.

But certainlya valid point

How about one of these..?

http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=252

Used with a wireless mouse, you can simply put the mouse out of reach or in a lockable drawer or an old lockable floppy disk box and leave it on your desk..;)

And if you had more than one of these keybaords, during flat periods you could practice everybody's favourite phase of the nuclear launch sequence.. :D

Just a thought..
